KALOUGATA: DRA

KALOUGATA: DRA (2020)
Collaboration between Jahra Wasasala (CONJAH), Henry Lai-Pyne (PSEUDO Studio) with sound composed by Oliva ‘Spewer’ Luki as a part of the larger world-building project, KALOUGATA (2020-2023)

In the short digital film iteration of KALOUGATA: DRA, Jahra and Ooshcon’s movement was translated through motion capture for DRA’s physicality as well as Jahra’s character/world-building around the entity DRA. Henry translated talanoa and movement, shared stories and his own distinct visual experimentations to develop the digital world. Through vocal sampling and his own sonic style, Spewer created the soundscape for KALOUGATA: DRA.

KALOUGATA: DRA is a collaboration between Jahra Wasasala (CONJAH), Henry Lai-Pyne (PSEUDO Studio) with sound composed by Oliva ‘Spewer’ Luki as a part of the larger world-building project, KALOUGATA.
Through talanoa (conversation), zoom calls, sharing of practice and experimentation, Jahra, Henry and Spewer built an immersive world around the trickster entity ‘DRA’ and their body-snatcher lore. KALOUGATA as a project has been shared as digital works, live performance, published poetry, costume development and gallery exhibitions.

BEHIND THE SCENES

SAIVA: test 1

SAIVA: test 1 (2022)
Collaboration between Jahra Wasasala & ooshcon (CONJAH), Frances Carter, and Oliva ‘Spewer’ Luki.
Featuring Byrin ‘XIII’ Mita and Tara Hodge

“there is a face, and yet there is none. there is a body, and yet there is none. the air between Us and Them turns acidic..“

SAIVA: test 1 is a character-study of the entity ‘SAIVA’. This short film was an experimental collaboration between CONJAH and Frances Carter, exploring different ways to build visuals around different characters. Through vocal sampling, sonic textures inspired from written poetry from CONJAH, contributions from the dancers, and his own creative instinct, Spewer built a captivating soundscape for SAIVA’s world. Byrin ‘XIII’ Mita and Tara Hodge free-styled their own movement languages and contributed character decisions for SAIVA throughout the day-long process. SAIVA's face mask was designed and made by Thorn Richards and Gemma Proebst within their own creature-informed collaborative practices.
